A ZOMBIE CHRISTMAS

It started in the early Spring. A small nearly blind mouse scurried two miles along a mine tunnel and stopped to nibble on a piece of dried debris ingesting the virus. It scampered back to its den. Physically the mouse did not change but an overwhelming urge to bite had the virus infecting the entire nest within hours.

Some of the mice scuttled along the tunnels up to where the miners worked.

“Damn it,” would ring out, “the little son of a bitch bit me.” Upon examination the skins was barely broken with almost no bleeding. By end of shift every miner had been bitten.

At home in bed that night, miners turned to their wives lustily enjoying their unions and during their mating bit them. Some smacked her lover playfully complained he was too rough and others were lost in their passion to notice the scrape across a nipple or curve of her neck that barely broke the skin, only a drop of blood that was suckled away.

The coastal town where the mining families shopped had an outbreak of people biting others. Those exposed sensed their infected brothers and sisters. Outwardly except for the uncontrollable urge to nip the unexposed they appeared normal. Internally the virus quietly multiplied.

This city had a major HUB that had planes that traveled to other country’s airports many with their own HUBs. The virus traveled with men taking women’s hands to kiss them and scraped their knuckles with teeth coated with saliva teaming with the virus. Women who buzzed a cheek lips and teeth scraped unnoticed. Spouse infected spouse, significant other to significant other, mother to child, on the playground, doctor’s offices, and illicit love affairs. All served the virus.

In the heat of August the last person uninfected was bitten by a lover. Still life appeared to continue. People worked, laughed, fought and loved. The virus continued to multiply inside every living creature on earth

On December 25th a small mouse two miles beneath the earth, seized – its organs dissolved and it physically died. Above ground families sat around their last Christmas tree, unwrapped gifts, welcomed friends and family into their homes. They ate their last Christmas dinner. All the while none realized they were now the living dead. Zombies, the science fiction books and movies called them.

By Valentine’s Day the human epidemic of deaths began around the world. The most brilliant minds in the scientific world worked diligently around the clock for a cure. But how do you cure what is already dead?

By the heat of summer all remnants of human bodies had dissolved; those brilliant minds unable to force life back into the dead; as they too, soon succumbed. Plant life flourished and the Zombie Virus died with its last victim.

Even as the plant life reclaimed the earth, life stirred at the bottom of the ocean.

These are my kind of zombies, still can't handle the brain eaters. ::shudder::

[identity profile] 1-rhiannon-1.livejournal.com 2011-12-29 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
The brain-eating variety is not for everyone, I agree. These zombies are pretty awesome too though :D

I like how the world ends, not with a bang but a whimper, as the poem goes. Neat circularity!

[identity profile] basric.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks.

You vent all you want, that's what friends are for--to listen without judgement. You've certainly red enough of mine.

I loved the concept here, and the trickling flow of this storyline.

Thank you so much.
