Word Count: 360
Maura turned as a officer brought a good-looking man into her morgue. He extended his hand large and warm, “Jim Longstreet.”
“Ah, you’re the detective from Florida about the unidentified body?”
He smiled sending shivers down her spine, he was a charmer, alright.
“I brought greeting from Carlos.”
“Yes, I met him and his wife at a conference a year ago. How are they.”
“Still married, still complaining about everything.”
She laughed, “You have something for me.”
“Since the DNA wasn’t exactly a clean match, I am the bearer of dentist’s records.”
“You could have just sent them over the computer.”
“I know, but this is a very bad man. Multiple homicides in a home invasion including children. I‘m hoping to take his body back home with me. I want to give their family closure.”
"IF he is your guy. Let me see the records.” She took the envelope and sat before her computer. After a moment she looked over her shoulder and up into his face, close enough that she felt the heat of his skin.
“Do you crowd Carlos like this.”
“Sorry,” he stepped back, “Yeah, he bit...I mean gripes about it all the time.”
“Well, it appears your trip was not in vain. He’s your man.”
Jim relaxed for the first time since he’d gotten the call. “When can I...”
“In a hurry to leave the Big Apple? You are impatient aren't you?” but she smiled. “Everything, in order, Paperwork and airport clearance. We should get you out of here tomorrow afternoon.”
“Guess I’ll find a place to hold up till then, maybe walk around the city a bit. Any suggestions?”
On impulse Maura touched his arm, “I have a guestroom. You could stay with me, we’ll go out to dinner and I will show you the town.”
“My treat, though.”
“Perhaps dutch.”
“You're thinkin' I’m a cop on a cop's salary but I got a nice law settlement a year ago so I think I can show a lady a nice night on the town even in New York City.
“Give me thirty minutes to get the ball rolling to get your guy to the airport and we’ll head out.”
He smiled that perfect smile at her as she sat him in a corner. Turning back to the computer she repeated to herself, “I will not diagnosis him, I will not diagnosis him. I will not talk shop.”
And she’d take him through the homicide bullpen to make Jane green with envy on the way out.

Date: 2011-06-16 02:54 am (UTC)Hmm...nice writing!
Date: 2011-06-17 01:44 am (UTC)I prefer NCIS L.A. to the original show -- Kenzie is just so cool.
Do please have a peek at my LJ -- I'm sorta theme-oriented, as you'll see. But I try to put in enough personal stuff so it's not "just a scrapbook" (as one reader carped...).
And add me if you enjoy it.
Thanks, Justine

Date: 2011-06-17 02:37 am (UTC)Lily & I became friends in IJIDOL. We wrote one together and she rocked it. I think she's fabulous as a writer and person. I know she has been busy with the baby but I have missed her journal entries.
