Sookie carried the table scraps to the edge of her woods and dumped it out for the creatures who lived there. She turned to go then noticed tiny BLUE balls of light danced between the trees near the lake that edged her land.
Puzzled she walked toward the lights picking her way over fallen limbs, piles of stones and bare tree roots. The moss cushioned her bare feet, though truth be told she’d run barefoot since she was a child so her feet had long ago toughened up.
It seemed the further she walked from the house the brighter and faster the blue balls fluttered between the trees. The night was cool for an August Louisiana night and she shivered in her shorts and tank top.
As she closed in on the sight, the sound of ?crying? No, not crying. . .cats howling.
She picked her way closer and edged around a tree. A large bonfire was in the middle of a clearing by the lake. Blue circular lights dozens of them danced above the flames.
To her shock a naked man walked into the clearing and morphed into a black panther joining the five others carousing about the fire. Sookie squealed and everything froze in the clearing and turned toward her. One morphed back.
“Catch her. Kill her.”
She screamed, turned and ran. They were fast but Sookie had home advantage. She hit her back porch at run open and locked herself inside and turned to run upstairs and hit a brick wall bouncing her backwards. Two hands jerked her back and she screamed.
“My Lover, what has you so afraid.”
“RUN, upstairs,” she gasped pulling him along until he stopped her, "The guns upstairs.
“Sookie, tell me.”
She jerked away and looked out the window, “They're coming. Hurry.”
“Who?” he refused to budge.
“You are so stubborn. Shapeshifters, black panthers.”
He jerked her to him, “Did they touch you?”
“No. Just scared me to death.”
He released her and cracked his knuckles, “Excellent, the only thing better than a dogfight is a catfight.” He was outside before she could gather her thoughts and back inside before she could move, bloody but grinning, a claw mark healing on his arm.
She was outraged, “You risked your life to fight?”
“There were only six, I have not experienced such a good fight in a long while. They don't leave the stench of dog either.”
“ERIC!," even as her hands moved over to check he was okay, "Did you kill them all.”
“They would have killed you and you are MINE. But no, not all, I sent some away bruised and broken. They will not return.”
He swept her into his arms and carried her upstairs.
“You’re getting blood and fur all over me, Eric.”
“Yes, and now I shall wash it off. By the way, what was with the blue dancing lights?”
