A/N: CONTINUING STORY OF "THE CHOSEN ONE" Bobby's been digging, now Ross suspects, too.
It was almost seven. Only the conference room was lit.
“Goren?”
“Captain.
“What’s this?”
“We’ve got a serial killer working NYC.
Files were piled in three, foot high stacks. Pictures, names on the board.
I’m confused...I don’t remember...”
“No, I discovered this myself, researching unsolved and a couple of mis-solved cases--on my own time.”
Ross studied the board his voice cool, “These are all over the place, different type women, ages, sizes, jobs, Burroughs, discovery. I see no similarities.”
“Except they were all taken on Friday night, killed on Sunday, dumped Monday, varying forms of sexual torture. COD an unknown drug OD. one about every two weeks”
“Even so, SVU/NARCOTICS...”
“I believe a Major Case detective---is the killer.”
“WHAT? Who? Goren this is a serious charge. I mean really. Who? What makes you think so?”
“I’d rather not say who. I need to pull some threads together. I want to be certain.”
“This is dangerous territory, Goren. We‘re talking about someone‘s reputation--freedom. . ."
Ross examined all of Bobby’s evidence. He listened carefully, having learned not to make a fool of himself by calling Goren’s hunches crazy then being proven wrong.
The facts were there and chilling and worse. . .pointed to a killer with knowledge only a cop would have, most likely a highly placed detective with extensive forensic knowledge, procedural investigative operations. This WAS too close to home.
“Where do you suggest we go from here, get Alex in on it?”
“No, not Alex.”
Ross was shocked at that; he knew they’d been having problems since she began seeing Rawlings, actually her behavior had radically changed, since seeing him. . .Rawlings? Terrible thing was..he could see it. "We need NARCO, SVU, IAD..."
"Not till Alex is out of it. She's an innocent victim in this."
“I want this kept between us Goren...I’ll work with you on this. If it’s wrong, no problem--no harm done."
"And Captain, Max Weston from Narcotics called me, a new date rape drug's on the street White Pearl, only shows up in liver tissue. Only find it if you're looking for it. Victim's lose all inhibitions yet stays alert. Alex called him and asked about it."
Ross knew he had to tread careful here, "Okay, I’ll get the orders for the last 6 women to be exhumed for tissue slices and let Liz have a look at them.
Bobby raised an eyebrow and rubbed his face. “This could get dangerous Captain. I think he has outside help, that they sexually subjugate the women before they kill them. Evidence of using gags and shackles of some type on them all.”
“Why hasn’t the computer picked this up, and alerted us?”
“He’s smart, and careful. He knows procedure and how to blur the trail...until now. He chose someone he works with and that’s where he’s made his first mistake.”
“Rawlings...Alex?”
“I think he’s drugging her, hurting her.”
"Eames? We talkin’ about the same woman. At times I'M afraid of her.”
“The drug is powerful and Max mentioned video. I think he may be blackmailing her with a tape.”
“Let’s start there. I want this kept quiet, off the record.
"We need to protect Alex."
"What has he been waiting for?"
"Me."
"I’ll arrange it and talk to Liz. We’ll take care of it.”
They locked everything into Ross’ office.
“You be careful, if he suspects. . .”
“I can take care of myself, and he‘s cocky. But Alex she has the right of freedom from fear. I'll get that back for her.”
Ross patted his back, We'll get it back, Detective. We will."
