The puddle jumper settled cloaked gently on the ground its rear bay door facing the cave in the cliff a hundred feet away.

“Can’t you get us closer?” Rodney was checking his pack.

“No, the cliff overhangs too far. We’ll have to run for it.”

“They’ll chase us, try to run us down.”

“Ronon, Rodney don’t shoot them. It’s their home. We don’t kill the wildlife except for food. . . don’t shoot at them it just makes them angry.”

“We’ll outrun them,” Ronon announced.

The bay door lowered. Rodney peaked around its side. One of the rhinoceros-like creatures--only bigger, much bigger grazed about a hundred yards away.

“Let’s go,” John took the lead with Ronon right behind him.

Rodney swore under his breath and quickly followed. Luckily the creature also had a similar near-sightedness like Earth’s rhinos. They made it easily inside the cave.

“Alright, McKay, get your rocks and make it fast. Ronon watch the door.

As Rodney climbed the pile of rocks; he swept a scanner over each as he ascended.

Sheppard disappeared down the side tunnel. Five minutes later he came back at a run; yelling, “Let’s go. Now, McKay, Now!”

“Wh. . .what? Sheppard?” Then Rodney saw the winged creature following John. He shoved another rock into his bag with the scanner and slid down the pile.

John skidded to a stop beside Ronon at the mouth of the cave, and Rodney crashed into him.

“It’s moved closer. I’m not sure we can outrun it,” Ronon said simply.

“Well, we have to try we’ve got something worse chasing us from the cave.”

There was a howl inside that send the three fleeing across the meadow. The grazing creature raised his head and let out a long grunt, then charged.

“RUN!”

“Just shoot the damn thing,” Rodney screamed.

They reached the bay door. John and Ronon grabbed Rodney and tossed him into the jumper. Furious that his prey had disappeared the creature continued to run and slammed into the cloaked jumper. The jumper shook and a cable snapped and fell with sparks while steam hissed beneath a panel.

The creature shook its mighty head and wandered away.

“I don’t have power. Rodney?”

“I’m looking, give me a minute.”

“There are three more of those things wandering this way.”

“I’m trying. We just got hit by a two-ton giant. What do you expect? It’s a wonder there isn’t a hole from the horn. There’s bound to be a huge dent.”

“Well, I wouldn’t go look right now because four more just wandered out of the forest, RODNEY.”

‘I’m trying.”

“Try harder.”

“Okay, that’s got it. Go, go.”

Back at Atlantis John settled the jumper down and opened the door.

Rodney turned on him, “I’ve been trying to get you to take me to that planet for these rocks for months, why the rush today.

Sheppard picked up his backpack.

Ronon smiled, “You got them.”

“Yeah. Let’s go.”

“What? What?” Rodney followed them with his bag of rocks. “And by the way you take me there to get my rocks and then go stir up the wildlife so I may not have enough to do what I need to do with them and need to go back again.”

“The other men accustomed to Rodney’s complaining just ignored him and made their way to Teyla’s quarters. John opened the door and the three entered. The door snicked shut behind Rodney. Ronon walked to the small cabinet and pulled out the vase.

John opened his bag and removed ten brightly glowing pink flowers.

“Flowers? You almost got us killed for FLOWERS? You just used my rocks as an excuse, didn’t you? It was too dangerous to go for my rocks but you could go for flowers? This is inexcusable.”

“Teyla is alone for Valentine’s Day, Rodney. Her man and child are off world,” Ronon helped John arrange the flowers.

“These are her favorite flowers.”

“But I don’t see why. . .”

The door whisked open and Teyla entered. “Why are you all here?” She froze as she spotted the flowers.

“Happy Valentine’s Day,” John and Ronon said together.

Delight lit up her face and she rushed burying her face in the fragrant blossoms. She turned, radiant grabbing each man in turn and hugged all three.

“Thank you. They are most beautiful. It is a most lovely surprise.” Tears flowed freely down her face, “You are all wonderful.”

Then she hugged and kissed them again. The three mumbled goodbyes and escaped while Teyla buried her face in flowers again.

They walked down the corridor. Rodney sighed, “Okay, so that was a good thing.”

Ronon shoved John affectionately, “Sheppard, you did good.”

Rodney not to be left out, “Yeah, we did good,” and hefted his rocks a little higher on his shoulder.

Ronon exchanged a look with John.

Science Fiction from the SYFY station--STARGATE ATLANTIS. If you knew the show you'd understand the byplay between the characters, but I appreciate you trying to read it. Thank you, my friend.
