Story:
Kate polished the bar with loving strokes. A breeze wafted through the door raising the loose hair around her neck drying the perspiration there. She was grateful she'd taken time to put her hair up. It was hot, but at least inside her saloon, the midday Arizona sun wasn't beating down on you.
Her eyes scanned the room, the heat was why the place was full and noisy. Kate was proud of her place. She ran clean games of chance relying on the idea the house usually won, her girls were clean and pretty with full figures the cowboys and ranchers seemed to prefer. There were three very large strong men upstairs, positioned outside the rooms. Patrons were not allowed to hurt her girls. Violation of her rule had the abuser hauled into the alley and encouraged never to return. So far none had.
The man at the middle of the bar raised his glass. Kate smiled. Rick Castle had been here almost four weeks now, writing his penny novels. He was really quite good. Rick was also very astute which is one of the reasons she'd taken him to her bed. First she was beginning to think he suspected her little sideline, secondly he kept other patrons from wanting to sample her favors even though she wasn't as buxom as her girls men did seem drawn to her. Lastly the Eastern dude knew his way around the female body and he never failed to bore her.
She went to stand between him and his reflection in the mirror he was admiring himself, "Are ya gonna write today, Castle?"
"Why, Kate? Did you have something more inviting to offer?"
Before Kate could blister him for his arrogance, yet again...the saloon doors swung open. Two men dressed in fancy clothes strode up to the bar.
"Mam, we're Detectives Ryan and Esposito...Pinkerton men," both laid their badges for her and Castle to see.
"What would two Pinkerton men be wanting with a barmaid?" Kate snot Rick a furious look.
"And you are?"
"HE is a penny novel writer from back East."
Castle held out a hand that Esposito shook noting with distaste he had hands soft as a woman. "Richard Castle."
"Never heard of ya."
Both men's looks dismissed the dude out of hand. A mistake, Kate thought.
They turned their attention back to Kate, "We're investigating the robberies in the surrounding towns and area--a train a coupla stage coaches and three banks.
Nonchalantly Kate poured two whiskeys for the men, "Why ask me?"
"Well, Mam, men have a tendency to brag when they're drunk and your the only saloon in town. Every robbery's happened near but not inside these city limits. Stands to reason they're probably based here."
"Well...I haven't heard nothing myself, but you're welcome to speak to my girls."
The men turned together to watch one girl lead a half drunk cowboy up the stairs.
"Don't think the men do much talkin' once they get upstairs, but still you're welcome to ask.
Esposito tossed back the whiskey and picked up his hat. Ryan handed her a card, she'd get Rick to read it to her later.
"I don't think it'll be necessary, Mam. But if you hear something, just use the card and telegraph us. We'll be investigating in town a few days then we'll be on our way."
Castle recognized the look in her eyes as she called Charles to cover the bar.
They made their way upstairs Rick whispered, "Kate, it's time to stop. This isn't a game anymore. These men will put you in prison or worse."
"Now Rick, you know I like my excitement."
"I'll give you excitement," he pushed her up against the door of her room, "But you need to stop, at least till these men take their leave."
"I do so love to hear you talk; almost as much as you like listening to yourself."
"Kate, I'm serious, these men are dangerous. I want a promise from you. Give me your word." He took a step back releasing her.
"Alright, I'll stay close to home, now where were you."
"Right about here," he scooped her off her feet.
Outside the two men stared down at the dust rising in the heat of the street.
"Ya buy that, Ryan?"
"Hell, no," they both stepped down into the dust.
